In winter, there is a lack of food for birds, and many edible fruit seeds are pecked away by birds in late autumn and early winter. Especially after heavy snow covers the already poor land, it is even more difficult for birds to find food. Birds have to wait for the snow to melt before they can forage; this causes many new born birds and frail old birds to freeze or starve to death.A pair of wild birds can only successfully breed and hatch 10 birds in a year, but less than a quarter of these 10 birds can successfully live in the next breeding season. Nearly half of the birds died because they did not have enough winter food in the first year.
